McAvoy, Ingalls, McDunnah spark Schenck boys to quarterfinal win

BANGOR- The Schenck Wolverines put three players in double figures on Saturday night, and used a decisive third quarter to pull away for a 60-39 Maine Principals’ Association Class D boys quarterfinal win over the Katahdin Cougars at the Cross Insurance Center.

A closely fought first quarter ended with the game tied 14-14, as Katahdin put six players in the scorebook and Mason McDunnah and Brady McAvoy combined for 10 points for Schenck. The Wolverines turned up their defensive pressure in the second, as McDunnah scored six more and they outscored the Cougars 15-6 to take a 29-20 halftime advantage. They also held their opponents leading scorer Grady Ritchie to just three points in the opening 16 minutes. A 17-7 third period allowed Schenck to start pulling away as they took a 19 point lead after three, and would eventually build it to 24 as the #3 seed Wolverines advanced to a Thursday semifinal.

Schenck was led by McAvoy who had a game high 18 points and 11 rebounds in the win. Ryan Ingalls had a double double with 16 points and 16 rebounds. McDunnah finished with 14 points, three rebounds, and three steals. Ritchie, who is 1,000 career point scorer for Katahdin, was held to 11 points in the loss as the #6 Cougars end their season at 14-6. Kyle McNally and Samuel Boone had eight points each, and Connor Edwards chipped in seven. The Wolverines play #2 Machias on Thursday at 10 a.m. with a spot in the regional final up for grabs.
