Ally Shields hits game winning shot to give Southern Aroostook girls fifth straight regional championship

BANGOR- Ally Shields put in a game winning layup with 20 seconds left to give Southern Aroostook their fifth straight regional championship on Saturday morning. Madison Russell scored a team high 16 points, including two free throws in the final seconds to secure a 53-49 win over Wisdom in the Maine Principals’ Association Class D girls Northern Maine Regional Championship game at the Cross Insurance Center.

Southern Aroostook held a 15-14 lead after the first quarter behind five points from Emmalee Landry. The teams went back and forth with neither team getting a lead larger than three. The Lady Warriors held a 29-26 halftime advantage.

Southern Aroostook built the lead to 42-37 at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Warriors scored the first basket in the fourth quarter to take a seven point lead. Wisdom scored 10 straight to take a 47-44 lead. Cami Shields evened the score at 47 when she made a basket, got fouled, and made the free throw. Ally Shields made the game winner with 20 seconds remaining off a pass from Cami Shields to send the Lady Warriors to another state championship game.

Madison Russell had five rebounds to go with her 16 points. Landry added 13 points, Cami Shields chipped in with 11 points. Southern Aroostook (18-3) will play Seacoast Christian in the state championship game at the Cross Insurance Center next Saturday, March 4th at 1 PM.

Lilly Roy had 19 points and seven rebounds to lead the Lady Pioneers. Olivia Ouellette had 11 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks.  Ava Lerman had 10 points, while Alexis Silvia chipped in with nine points (3 three pointers). Wisdom finishes the season with a 20-1 record.
