Will Davies from Thornton Academy and Lizzy Gruber from Gardiner High School were named the 2023 Mr. Maine and Miss Maine Basketball Award winners during the MABC Awards Banquet on Friday night at the Anah Shrine in Bangor.
Davies helped lead Thornton Academy to a 17-4 record this winter averaging 20 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. He hit a controversial game winning shot in the Class AA South semifinals that led the Trojans to the AA South Regional Final, where they fell to Portland. Gruber won the KVAC Player of the Year and led Gardiner to an 18-0 regular season averaging almost 21 points a game, 16 rebounds, and almost six blocks per contest. She also reached 1,000 career points and rebounds in this senior season. The Tigers were upset by eventual state champion Lawrence in the Class A North Final.
The award is given annually to the top Maine senior basketball player on both the boys and girls side.
