Bruins break all-time points record; Celtics to play the Hawks in the first round of the NBA Playoffs

April 12, 2023

Tomas Nosek scored a game winning unassisted goal in the third period on Tuesday night, as the Boston Bruins broke an NHL record for points in a season with a 5-2 victory over the Washington Capitals at TD Garden.

Brad Marchand and Tyler Bertuzzi also notched powerplay goals, and Garnet Hathaway and Jake Debrusk would also find the back of the net as Boston (64-12-5) won their seventh straight game. Linus Ullmark also got his 40th win in net with 19 saves, but was pulled halfway through the third period and as a precautionary due to some muscle tightening. Jeremy Swayman stopped all six shots he faced in relief. Nick Jensen and Tom Wilson scored for Washington (35-37-9) in the loss. The Bruins are expected to rest a good portion of their key players in the regular season finale at Montreal on Thursday night. Boston (133 points) broke an almost 50 year record for points in a season that was set by the 1976-77 Canadiens (132).

In one of the NBA Eastern Conference play-in games, the Atlanta Hawks got 25 points from Trae Young and earned the #7 seed for the first round with a 116-105 win over the Miami Heat in Miami on Tuesday. Atlanta (42-41) will head to Boston to open up that best of seven first round series on Saturday at 3:30 against the #2 Celtics (57-25), with game two set for TD Garden on Tuesday night at 7. Boston won all three regular season meetings over the Hawks.
