Woodland baseball shuts out Calais to stay unbeaten

Two pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout on Friday afternoon, as the Woodland Dragons beat the Calais Blue Devils 13-0 in five innings in high school baseball action in Calais.

Woodland secured the victory thanks to seven runs in the first inning. The rally was led by walks by Brogan Brown and Evan Curtis, a single by Jack Downing, and a double by Cyrus Sewell. Sewell earned the victory on the mound for the Dragons. He surrendered no runs on two hits over three innings, striking out four. Liam O’Neill threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Muwin Dana was on the hill for Calais. The pitcher lasted one third of an inning, allowing one hit and seven runs while striking out one. Chayeden Newell threw 4.2 innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Woodland (5-0) had 12 hits in the game. Downing, Shain McIver, Curtis, and Braden Richard all collected multiple hits. Downing led the way with three hits in four at bats. Brown had two stolen bases, as they had five steals on the day. The Dragons were sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Richard had the most chances in the field with eight. Newell went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Calais (0-3). Woodland will host Shead, while the Blue Devils play host to Machias both on Monday at 4 p.m.
