Grady Cummings no-hitter highlights doubleheader sweep for Sacopee Valley over Mount View

THORNDIKE- Grady Cummings fired a no-hitter to lead Sacopee Valley to a 3-0 game one win over Mount View. Caleb Vacchiano smacked three hits to lead the Hawks to a 6-1 game two win as they remained undefeated on the season with the doubleheader sweep.

Cummings started game one by retiring the first nine batters, including six consecutive strikeouts in a stretch that went through the third inning. Noah Hurd was the only baserunner for the Mustangs, he reached on an error in the fourth inning and a walk in the sixth inning.

Anthony Lepore was on the mound for the Mustangs and he was shutting down the high powered Hawks in the early innings. He didn’t allow a hit until Keegan Thibodeau singled to lead off the fifth inning. Thibodeau was removed from the bases when he was caught stealing. Lepore retired the first two batters in the sixth inning, Carson Black followed with a single. Lepore was replaced on the mound by Hurd. Vacchiano would reach on an error. Brady Metcalf infield single scored Black.

Lepore came back to the mound. Austin Croteau hit a double that scored two and gave the Hawks a three run advantage. Cummings finished the masterpiece on the mound by retiring the side in order in the seventh inning.

The Mustangs started quick in game two. Hurd led off the bottom of the first with a single and came around to score to give his team their only lead of the day.

Hurd made sure Mount View kept that lead in the early innings. Hurd allowed five singles in the first four innings. He was able to work around that with six strikeouts in the first four frames.

In the fifth inning, Hurd recorded two quick strikeouts. Black followed with a single, and Vacchiano doubled him home and the game was even at 1.

The game remained even until the 7th inning. With one out, Hurd reached his pitch count limit.  Game one starter Lepore came in and the Hawks adjusted from their game one hitting struggles. The five batters Lepore faced all reached with two walks and three hits. Brady Metcalf had the biggest swing with a three run double.

Black retired the final five Mustang hitters to lock down the win.

Sacopee finishes off doubleheader sweep over Mount View

Hurd reached base five times in the doubleheader. Mount View (7-8) will finish the regular season at Belfast on Tuesday. The Mustangs are in a battle for one of the final playoff spots in Class C North.

Black, Brady Metcalf, Croteau, Thibodeau, and Bryce Stacey each had a hit for the Hawks in game one. Cummings struck out 10 and walked only one in his no-hit effort. Vacchino had three hits in game two, while Black, Croteau, and Thibodeau added two hits each, and Metcalf and Ronan Anderson chipped in with one each. Cummings also started on the mound in game two. He allowed one run on one hit and one walk, while striking out two in two innings. Black earned the game two pitching win. Sacopee (14-0) will finish the regular season with home games on Monday and Tuesday against Traip and Waynflete. The Hawks are the current number one seed in Class C South.
