Trenton loses in heartbreaking fashion in day two at the American Legion Baseball World Series

August 11, 2023

The Trenton Acadians dropped to 0-2 in pool play on Friday afternoon, falling in heartbreaking and walkoff fashion 2-1 to Cheyenne, Wyoming in the Senior American Legion Baseball World Series at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, North Carolina.

Cheyenne got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning when Nolan Horton dropped a flyball single in front of David Baugh in leftfield with one out to score Kaden Anderson for a 1-0 lead. Trenton had a great opportunity in their next at bat in the top of the third. Joey Clouse led off with a walk, Brett Bragdon reached on a catchers interference, and Wyatt Bragdon lopped a single down the rightfield line to load the bases with noone out. Hunter Curtis tied it with a sacrifice flyout, but Wyoming escaped anymore damage when Miles Palmer lined out to the shortstop and Brett Bragdon was doubled up at second base. Both pitchers were fantastic to keep the contest even until the bottom of the seventh inning. Peter Keblinsky for the Acadians was lifted from the game with two outs and noone on base in that seventh inning at 108 pitches. Palmer came on in relief and hit Colter McAnelly with a pitch, setting the stage for Julien Romero who hit one into the rightfield corner for a double scoring McAnelly to end it.

Keblinsky gave up one run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 6.2 innings in what was a no-decision for the righthander. Palmer was tagged with the loss. Wyatt Bragdon and Keblinsky each had one hit, with Hunter Curtis driving in the lone run in the third inning. Curtis has three of the four RBI for Trenton so far in the World Series. Romero had two hits for Cheyenne (1-1) including the clutch two-out game winner, and Bradley Feezer won on the mound. The 6 foot 7 righty gave up one run (none earned) on two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in the complete game effort. With League City, Texas defeating Troy, Alabama on Friday night the Acadians won’t be eligible to make it to the semifinal round on Monday, and play their final game of the season on Sunday at 1 p.m. against League City.
