September 7, 2023

Abby Kraemer scored very late in the second half on Thursday evening, lifting the Maine Black Bears to a 2-1 non-conference women’s soccer win over Boston University at Nickerson Field in Boston.

Boston University (2-3-2) struck first in the match when Shayla Brown tallied with just over two minutes left in the first half off an assist by Cam O’Connor. After halftime, it didn’t take Maine long to answer. Julie Lossius sent a cross from the left wing to the front of the net, and Kristina Kelly settled it and fired a shot off the left post and in past Terriers goalie Celia Braun 44 seconds into the second half to make it 1-1. The game winner came with just over two minutes left to play, set up by Laura Kirkby. Kirkby sent a low angled cross to the front as she streaked down the left wing, and Abby Kraemer directed a one timer with her right foot into the net to give the Black Bears the victory. It was the fifth goal of the season for Kraemer.

Kira Kutzinski made six saves in net in the Maine win. Boston University had the edge in shots attempted 11-10 and shots on goal 7-5, while the Black Bears had more corner opportunities 6-3. Braun made two saves for the Terriers out of the Patriot League. Maine is now 4-0-3, and will try to finish the non-conference portion of their schedule unbeaten when they stay on the road Sunday at the University of Illinois-Chicago (1-3-2) out of the Missouri Valley Conference. The Bears open America East action the following Sunday at home against Vermont.
