Lady Howlers collect road win, improve to 5-0

September 21, 2023

At Hodgdon Wednesday, four different players scored as Penobscot Valley girls soccer defeated the Hawks 6-2.

Junior Ellie Austin struck first, as she cut from the outside-in to receive a long pass from Lila Cummings. Austin dribbled once and let loose a 20 yard shot that went in the lower left corner. Cummings would later get one of her own, as she dribbled from near midfield toward the 18, and shot from the left of the semi-circle, putting the ball in the upper ninety of the goal. The score was 2-0 at the half.
Barely three minutes into the second half, the Howlers struck again. An attack by Austin near the endline led to a foul being called and PVHS was awarded a penalty kick. Cummings calmly finished off the PK for a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Rylee Moulton scored the next goal in transition, as she worked her way through the defenders and put the ball to the right of Hodgdon goalkeeper Paige Fitzpatrick. Senior Brooke Champion tallied her first ever varsity goal, as she finished a Moulton shot that had deflected off the post for the score.
Hodgdon wouldn’t give up however, as Ava Ezell made her way to her left into the 18 only to cut back to her right and blast the ball past PV keeper Brooklynn Raymond.  Moulton would get her second of the night simply by sheer will, as she battled through 3 defenders and fired a shot in for a 6-1 lead. Ezell, with nearly an identical sequence and move as her first goal scored again with about 10 minutes to go to round out the scoring.
Raymond saved 8 of 13 shots for Penobscot Valley, who improved to 5-0.  They are scheduled to host Calais Saturday morning for their Homecoming game.
Fitzpatrick stopped 18 of 26 shots for the Hawks, who dropped to 3-2. Hodgdon will travel north to Madawaska on Friday.
