ORONO- The #13 Maine Black Bears and #1 Boston College Eagles men’s hockey teams battled through 60 minutes of regulation and a five minute overtime period on Saturday evening at a sold out Alfond Arena, and officially would end in a 2-2 tie. The Eagles would pick up an extra point in Hockey East by winning a shootout, but the Black Bears would take four out of a possible six points in the standings on the weekend.
It was a pretty even first period. Boston College had a pair of chances during a 4 on 4 situation, as Lukas Gustafsson shot one high and wide on a 2 on 1 breakout and Aidan Hreschuk had a good look in the low slot that was gloved by Victor Ostman. Maine broke though late to take the lead, as Felix Trudeau was able to get to a loose puck in front of the net and knock it through the legs past Eagles goaltender Jacob Fowler at 18:41 for a 1-0 Black Bears lead.
With Maine on the powerplay early in the second period, Oskar Jellvik nearly tied it for BC when he got possession in the high slot in the Black Bears zone and turned and fired a shot that hit the post behind Ostman. Just eight seconds after the Eagles penalty expired, Gabe Perreault tied it for the guests at 2:43. Bradly Nadeau almost gave the lead back to the home team just over two minutes later when he hit a post after a rush down the right wing. A high sticking penalty called on Josh Nadeau and a hooking penalty to Luke Antonacci would give Boston College 1:25 of a 5 on 3 powerplay. Maine was able to kill that off, rising the Alfond crowd to their feet. 45 seconds after the powerplay ended, Bradly Nadeau had another good chance off a pass from Lynden Breen on a tip but couldn’t quite get enough stick on it. Brandon Chabrier had a shot from the right point that was stopped by Fowler a couple minutes later, and Fowler also stopped Trudeau on the rebound as it remained tied through 40 minutes.
Maine would take the lead again at the 8:00 mark of the third period, ending an 0-22 powerplay drought. Thomas Freel walked into the right faceoff circle and found Josh Nadeau in the low slot. Nadeau would fire a quick wristshot past Fowler for a 2-1 Black Bears advantage. Boston College sent it to overtime by scoring at 15:46. The puck would pinball around in the low slot, and Ryan Leonard scooped it up and buried it behind Ostman. Maine took a penalty for too many men on the ice 51 seconds into overtime, but they once again did a great job on the penalty kill to thwart that Eagles opportunity and the game would officially end in a 2-2 tie. The shootout would go to six rounds, and Trudeau was unsuccessful in that sixth round and Gustafsson would score on the other end on Ostman to end it and give BC the extra point.
Ostman made 26 saves for Maine, who goes to 6-1-1 and 3-0-1 in Hockey East. Fowler had 31 stops for Boston College, as their record now stands at 7-2-1 and 2-1-1 in the conference. The Black Bears went 1-4 on the powerplay, while the Eagles were 0-4. Maine is back in action on the road next weekend with a pair of Hockey East games at Boston University. Face-off is slated for 7 p.m. on Friday and at 6 on Saturday.
