DOVER-FOXCROFT- The Ellsworth Eagles led from start to finish, and used a third quarter run to break open a 12 point game in improving their record to 2-0 in the early season with a 71-47 Class B boys basketball win over Foxcroft Academy on Monday night.
Ellsworth put five players in the scorebook in the first quarter. A 9-0 run finished off by a three point play by Miles Palmer put the Eagles up 18-6, and they led 20-13 after the opening eight minutes. After Foxcroft cut it to six on a couple occasions early in the second, another run this time of 9-2 pushed the advantage for the visitors to 13. They would lead by as many as 15, and held that 15 point lead at the break as well 41-26. After trailing by as many as 16 early in the third quarter, the Ponies got it back down to 12 helped by senior guard Jadon Richard. Ellsworth though would then put it away at that point, ending the period on a 12-1 run with six of those points coming from Josiah James-Chin to increase the lead to 23 as they pulled away for the victory.
Kyle Kenny led Ellsworth in the win with 17 points and five rebounds. Chance Mercier added 12 points and eight rebounds. Palmer finished with nine points, five rebounds, and four assists. Also scoring for the Eagles was James-Chin and Dawson Curtis with nine points each, Isiah Corson had six, Hollis Grindal with four, Cruz Coffin and Jackson Barry had two each, and Brayden King chipped a free throw for one point. They shot 14-25 from the free throw line. Richard led Foxcroft Academy (1-1) in the loss with 22 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Lucas Sands had 11 points and six rebounds. Also scoring for the Ponies was Silas Topolski with six points, Shane Birungi had three, Devin Henderson and Wyatt Rayfield had two each, and Kaiden Whitten contributed one free throw for one point. They shot 17-32 from the free throw line. The Eagles outrebounded the Ponies 38-20. Ellsworth returns to action on Thursday when host Orono in a rematch of last seasons regional final. Foxcroft will host Presque Isle on Saturday afternoon, a game that can be seen live on Eastern Maine Sports Media.
