PCHS builds big lead and holds off Schenck for girls basketball win

GUILFORD- The Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) Pirates built a 20 point halftime lead and held on for 43-40 girls basketball win over Schenck on Thursday night.

The Pirates held a 14-2 lead after the first quarter, and outscored Schenck 11-3 in the second quarter to take a 25-5 halftime advantage.

Harlee Sprague scored all 16 of her points in the second half as the Wolverines were able to cut the deficit to one on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter. The Pirates were able to hold on with the help of three baskets late in the fourth quarter from Bella Buehne. The Pirates were playing without three starters at the end of the game as Hope Hunt left the game due to injury in the first, while Reese Starbird and Ava Goulette fouled out.

Goulette dominated with 17 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks, three assists, and three steals. Buehne put in 10 points, while Starbird finished with five points and nine rebounds. PCHS (2-4) will play at Penobscot Valley on January 8th. PCHS outrebounded the Wolverines 38-28.

Addyson Freeman added 10 points for the Wolverines. Schenck (3-5) will host Bangor Christian on Tuesday.
