PORTLAND- Parker Sergent had a game-high 25 points, 17 in the second half on Friday evening in leading the Cony Rams to a 57-54 come from behind win over the Nokomis Warriors in Class A North boys basketball action as part of the Maine Event at the Cross Insurance Arena.
Sergent had six in the first quarter, in a period that both teams had a lead but it was Cony taking a slim 16-15 advantage after eight minutes after leading by as many as six early on. Nokomis took their biggest lead of the first half on a basket by Connor Sides at 21-18 in the second. A last second three-pointer by Alex Grant had the Warriors up by that same three point margin 26-23 at the halftime break.
It looked like Nokomis may pull away in the third quarter, as the Warriors used a 9-2 spurt to extend to a 42-35 advantage. Four different players scored during the run. Cony came right back though, as Sergent put up his biggest effort of the contest scoring 13 points in the period and his conventional three-point play tied it for the Rams 44-44 heading into the fourth. A bucket from Parker Morin ended up being the game winner in the final stanza, as Cony built up a 53-48 lead. A three-pointer by Grant pulled Nokomis within 54-53 with 32 seconds left, but Jordan Benedict and Sergent combined to go 3-4 at the foul line that would give Cony the victory. The Warriors had two three-point attempts in the final 17 seconds that both came up short.
Grant led Nokomis in the loss with 17 points (five 3-pointers). Connor Sides ended up with 13 points, Seth Bowden had 12, and Dawson Townsend chipped in eight points. The Warriors went 7-8 at the line and fell to 6-3 on the season. Along with the big game from Sergent, Morin added 13 points in the win for Cony. Benedict and Alex Fournier also contributed eight points each. The Rams shot 12-17 at the line in improving to 2-6 on the year. Nokomis is back in action Tuesday at Mt.
