Mt. View sweeps boys/girls basketball doubleheader over MCI

January 19, 2024

PITTSFIELD- The Mount View Mustangs visited the MCI Huskies in a boys/girls basketball doubleheader on Friday night, and it was the visitors from Thorndike taking home a pair of wins.

In the girls game- In a very closely contested game throughout, a free throw by Savannah Lorenz with 1.3 seconds left in the fourth quarter was enough to lift Mount View to a 44-43 win over MCI. Arianna Bradeen had eight points in the first quarter, as the Mustangs would lead 11-8 after the opening eight minutes. The Huskies hung around all night, and four points each from Jyllian Riendeau, Skyla Dean, and Kayleigh Dunton in the second period kept them within striking distance at 27-22 at the half. Seven more points by Dunton in the third allowed MCI to outscore Mt. View 12-6, and had the hosts in the lead 34-33 headed to the final quarter. In a big turn of events, the Huskies were up 40-37 after Dean connected on 1-2 from the foul line with 2:41 left to play. But a quick 5-0 run by the Mustangs on a free throw by Lorenz and two offensive rebounds and two layups by Bradeen gave them the lead back 42-40. Dunton tied it back up for MCI at 43-43 with 38 seconds remaining, and they had a chance to win it in the final seconds. Riendeau got fouled going to the basket with 14.8 seconds showing on the clock, but would miss both free throws. They were able to come up with the offensive rebound, but would miss three attempts from in close and then on that ensuing rebounding action Lorenz got fouled with her team in the bonus. She missed the first one at the line, but made the second. All MCI had time for me was a three quarters court desperation heave by Riendeau that was off the mark as time expired.

Bradeen had 22 points and seven rebounds to lead Mount View (8-3) to the win. Lorenz ended up with a double double with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Madison Bennett chipped in four points, Emma Hurd had two, while Hannah Ferreria along with Olivia Kirby had a foul shot each for one point. The Mustangs out of Class C North won the rebounding battle 31-18, and shot 14-28 from the foul line. Dunton led MCI in the loss with 21 points and seven rebounds. Riendeau contributed 13 points. Also getting on the scoresheet was Dean with seven points and six rebounds, and Aleah Harris with two points. The Huskies from Class B North shot 9-19 at the charity stripe in falling to 4-8 on the season.

In the boys game- Three players scored in double figures, as Mount View completed the sweep by slowly pulling away from MCI in a 56-37 victory. It was 11-11 after one quarter, but the Mustangs had five different players score in the second outscoring the Huskies 16-6 to take a 27-17 halftime lead. Drew Shorey had a big night and allowed the hosts to hang around even into the third quarter, cutting it to seven at one point. But Mt. View was too much as they turned it on in the fourth leading by as many as 23, as seven players got into the book during the period to improve their record to 8-3 in Class C North.

Wyatt Bennett led the way in the win for Mount View with 14 points and five rebounds. Wyatt Evensen had 13 points and seven rebounds, while Noah Hurd also got into double figures with 11 points. Also scoring for the Mustangs was Ben Osbourne with nine points, Stuart Knowlton with seven, and Ben Richards along with Miles Carter each added a free throw for one point a piece. They also won the rebounding battle 28-19, and shot 8-16 from the foul line. Shorey had 30 points in the loss for Class B MCI, who falls to 4-8. Caleb Kennedy had five points, and Brady Rogers rounded out the Huskies scoring with two points. They shot 8-12 at the line.

Both Mt. View teams play Waterville on Tuesday, as the girls are on the road and the boys are at home. The MCI teams play Lincoln Academy next Friday, as the girls are at home and the boys are on the road.
