January 28, 2024

In Howland Saturday afternoon, senior captain Colin Dunn scored a team-high 14 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished out three assists as the Penobscot Valley boys basketball team defeated Penquis Valley 53-40

The Howlers started off hot, building an early 10-2 lead, but Penquis would go on a 7-0 run closing the gap to one point. A Caleb Moon 3-pointer stopped the run, and two Kaden Loring free throws gave Penobscot Valley a 15-9 lead after one quarter.

In the second quarter, the Howlers received scoring from five different players starting with a corner three by Noah Austin. Brennan Grant and Dylan McKenzie connected on four points each during the frame, as their Patriots went into the locker room down 29-20.

Penquis outscored Penobscot Valley 13-6 in the third, led by six points from Kooper Badger which closed the deficit to two 35-33. A pair of Colin Harding free throws and a post-up bucket by Dunn gave the Howlers some breathing room to start the fourth.  The Howler defense was excellent in the final frame, holding the Patriots to seven points. Dunn finished the game strong, scoring eight points in the final eight minutes.

Penobscot Valley improved to 6-8 on the season, as they continue to fight for a playoff berth. They will travel to Lincoln to face Mattanawcook Academy on Tuesday.  Besides the 14 points from Dunn, other scorers for the Howlers included Loring (13), Harding (11), Ryan Dawson (7), Moon (5), Austin (3), and Chase Osgood (2).

Badger (16) and Grant (15) shouldered the scoring load for the Patriots, who dropped to 5-10. Dylan McKenzie and Brayden Hobbs netted six and three points respectively.  Penquis will travel to Central on Tuesday.
