At Howland on Tuesday night, the Penobscot Valley (PVHS) boys basketball team shook off a sluggish start and rallied past Dexter 34-24 in the regular season finale.
In a rematch of a Dexter win by the same score back in December, neither team had any offense clicking in the first half as the Tigers led 6-4 after one quarter and 12-8 at the half.
The third quarter was instrumental for PVHS. After giving up the opening basket of the second half to fall behind by six, the Howlers went on a 12-0 run to jump ahead for good 20-14. They would outscore Dexter 11-8 in the fourth quarter to cap off the 10 point victory.
PVHS finished with a regular season record of 9-9, after a 1-4 start to the year and will most likely play a road prelim game. As with most Howlers wins this season, the defense and balanced scoring was the key. Sophomore Ryan Dawson had a team-high eight points, while seniors Kaden Loring and Colin Harding had seven each. Harding also had four steals and seven offensive rebounds. Also chipping in with six points a piece were seniors Colin Dunn and Caleb Moon. Dexter (7-11) was led by Kody Kimball, who netted a game-high 10 points. Ethan Doherty had six, while Bryce Cooper and Kellen Peavey put in four points each.
PVHS recognized their seniors prior to tip-off, including band member Emerson Lindsay, basketball manager Michael Fitzsimmons, and JV players Wyatt Loveland along with Joey Hotchkiss. Senior members of the boys varsity basketball team in David Herlihy, Loring, Harding, Dunn, and Moon. The school also paid tribute to Reed Ireland, a classmate of these seniors, who lost his battle with cancer as an 8th grader in 2020.
