PVHS girls use balanced scoring and strong defensive effort to advance to the regional final

BANGOR- Penobscot Valley High School (PVHS) went on a 16-0 first half run and built a 24 point halftime lead, in cruising to a 55-12 Maine Principals’ Association Class C girls basketball semifinal win over Fort Kent on Thursday night at the Cross Insurance Center. The Howlers advance to the regional championship game for a second straight season.

Fort Kent had just one lead in the game and that was early on at 3-2 on a three-pointer by Lily Werntgen. PVHS took over after that, scoring the final 14 points of the first quarter sparked by six of those by Lila Cummings. Cummings also scored the first basket of the second period to make it a 16-0 run. The Howlers had five scorers in the quarter building a 30-6 halftime advantage. They continued to roll in the second half, outscoring the Warriors 25-6 and holding Fort Kent without a point in the final period.

Cummings and Ellie Austin both had a double double in the win for PVHS. Austin had 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Cunmings had 11 points and 12 boards. Rylee Moulton also put in 11 points, Brooklyn Raymond had eight, and Ashlyn St. Cyr contributed seven points. Mia Voisine had four points and six rebounds for Fort Kent, while Lily Oliver and Werntgen chipped in three points each. Oliver also had five rebounds. The #2 Warriors were outrebounded by the Howlers 36-15 in ending their season with a record of 15-5. #3 PVHS (18-2) will play for the Class C Regional Title on Saturday at 6 p.m. against #1 Dexter.
