BANGOR- Noah Hurd scored 30 points on Saturday night, helping to lead Mt. View to a 72-38 win over Calais in a Maine Principals’ Association Class C North boys regional championship game at the Cross Insurance Center. It is the first regional title since 1987 for the Mustangs (Class B), but this is their first one in Class C.
Mt. View never trailed. Hurd had 10 points in each of the first three quarters. The Mustangs scored the first seven points of the game, and after two Calais baskets to get on the scoreboard, they would go on a run of 19-2 that stretched into the second period for a 25-6 advantage. A last second three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer by Hurd (his third of the first half) had Mt. View up 38-22 at the break.
Mt. View scored the first 13 points of the third quarter to put it away, as Hurd continued his big night. The senior guard finished with 30 points (6 three-pointers), four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Wyatt Evensen added 12 points and five assists, Wyatt Bennett contributed 10 points and six rebounds, and Stuart Knowlton chipped in nine points and five rebounds. The Mustangs were only one more made three-pointer away from tying a single game Class C regional record (11), as they finished with 10 makes from behind the arc in the contest. The #7 seed defeated the top three teams in the North to take the title by a total of 94 points (31.3 point average margin of victory). Mt. View (16-6) will face Monmouth in the Class C State Championship game at the Augusta Civic Center on Saturday, March 2nd at 8:45 p.m.
Kaeson Dana led Calais with 11 points. Jeremy Turner had seven points, four rebounds, and two steals, while Philip Bassett and Oliver Clark would record five points each. The Blue Devils, the defending regional champion, end their season as the runner-up with a record of 17-4.
