February 25, 2024

Despite outshooting Northeastern 39-22 on Saturday night, the #9 Maine men’s hockey team ended up with a weekend conference split after the Huskies blanked the Black Bears 4-0 at the Alfond Arena.

Justin Hryckowian got the game winner on the powerplay for Northeastern at 8:35 of the first period. Alex Campbell added some insurance with a pair of tallies at 5:13 and 9:18 of the second. Maine had plenty of chances (0-6 on the powerplay) and also plenty of shots, but Cameron Whitehead stopped them all in net for the Huskies to help earn his team the road victory. Brett Edwards got the final marker of the night at 15:21 of the third period. It is just the second home loss of the season for Maine (10-2-2).

Albin Boija took the defeat in net for Maine making 18 saves. Sully Scholle (6), Harrison Scott (5), Donovan Villeneuve-Houle (5), and Lynden Breen (4) combined for 20 of the 39 shots on goal. The Black Bears fall to 19-9-2 and 11-8-1 in Hockey East. Campbell (two goals), and Hryckowian (one goal, one assist) led Northeastern to the win. The Huskies went 1-3 on the powerplay, getting the one that ended being the game winner with the extra man. NU is now 15-14-2 and 8-13-0 in the conference. It is just the second time Maine has been shutout this season (2-0 to UConn on January 13). The Black Bears head to Burlington next weekend and Gutterson Fieldhouse to take on the Vermont Catamounts on Friday and Saturday night with puck drop for both games at 7 p.m.
