At Howland Saturday, Penobscot Valley celebrated their large group of senior boys prior to tipoff and then proceeded to defeat Dexter 48-39.
The Tigers started off fast, taking a 7-2 lead with the help of five early points from Bryce Cooper. The Howlers went on a 6-0 run of their own to get back in it, before taking a 13-9 lead after the first quarter. PVHS extended their lead in the second going into the break with a 24-15 advantage.
In the third, the Penobscot Valley offense sputtered, scoring only two points and allowing Dexter to get back in it. In the fourth, the lead shrunk to only one point. With just over two minutes remaining and the Howlers clinging to a three point lead, Chase Osgood kicked the ball out to Drouin Brochu who knocked down a 3-pointer and created some breathing room. The Tigers were forced to foul, and PVHS went 13-17 from the line in the quarter including 8-10 for Darius Miranda as they held on for the win.
Penobscot Valley got balanced contributions from their main rotational players as they have all season. Miranda led the way in scoring with 11 points, while Noah Austin scored 10 points with a team-high eight rebounds. Osgood finished with eight points and four assists. Other scorers included six from Brochu, five from Aiden Champion, and four by Ryan Dawson. Max Hamel also had four points and five steals. The night marked the final home game for senior players Austin, Brochu, Dawson, Osgood, Miranda, Seamus Herlihy, Logan Wallace, and videographer Lilin Zhang. PVHS improved to 10-7 on the season as they try to secure a playoff berth. They will travel to Lee Academy on Thursday for their final game of the regular season.
The Tigers were led by their senior point guard Cooper who had a game-high 15 points on the night. Isaiah Robinson knocked down a pair of threes as part of his 10 point evening. Other scoring contributions came from Kody Kimball with seven, Will Simpson with four, and Bodhi Langlais with three. Dexter drops to 6-10 and has two games remaining.
