Maine softball swept at Lowell, baseball snaps 16 game losing streak with a win at UMBC

The Maine baseball and softball teams finished off their league opening series on Saturday and Sunday at UMass-Lowell and UMBC.

On Saturday at Lowell, Massachusetts- The Black Bears softball team was beaten in game one 13-5 in five innings by mercy and 5-1 in game two of a doubleheader, as the Riverhawks earned the weekend conference sweep. Morgan Pool had two RBI and Maggie Helms had a solo homer in the game one loss, as UML scored eight runs in the first inning and built a 13-0 lead. Kyla Brogan took the defeat in the circle allowing 12 runs (seven earned) in 1.2 innings. Keira Inman had the lone RBI for her team in game two, while Alysen Rieth was tagged with the pitching defeat in relief. Maine (7-20, 0-3 America East) will play a non-conference doubleheader at Stonehill on Wednesday, and are scheduled to open the home league schedule in Orono with a three game series vs Binghamton beginning next Saturday at noon (doubleheader).

At Baltimore, Maryland- The Black Bears baseball team, after a loss to UMBC on Saturday, would finally snap their losing streak at 16 by salvaging the final game of the weekend over the Retrievers 4-3 on Sunday. Freshman Troy Carpenter was the offensive hero with a three-run homerun and a game winning solo homer in the ninth to snap a 3-3 tie. Carpenter is hitting .275 and has nine homeruns along with 28 RBI in the first 22 games of his college career. Quinn Murphy also had two hits. Tommy Martin picked up the victory in relief of Gianni Gambardella. Maine (3-19, 1-2 America East) is also scheduled to open the home league schedule next weekend as they host UMass-Lowell at Mahaney Diamond for a three game set beginning on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
