Husson baseball splits road NAC doubleheader at VTSU Lyndon

The Husson baseball team began a four game North Atlantic Conference series at Vermont State University Lyndon on Saturday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader at Skip Pound Field in Lyndonville, Vermont.

Game 1 (9 innings)- Husson 18, VTSU Lyndon 4: Matt Holmes (Bangor), Liam Kelley, and Wes Piper (Greely) all had a big game at the plate as the Eagles erupted for 18 runs and 17 hits in the blowout win. Holmes had two hits and five RBI that included a three-run homerun. Kelley had three hits and four RBI while smacking a two-run homer. Piper had four RBI with two hits that both went over the fence for a pair of two-run homeruns. Preston Libby and Yates Emerson (Bangor) each contributed two hits and one RBI each. Chris Lusignan (2-0) earned the pitching victory allowing four runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 5.0 innings. The homers by the freshman Piper were the first of his collegiate career.

Game 2 (7 innings)- VTSU Lyndon 9, Husson 8- The Hornets rallied from a 7-3 fifth inning deficit and scored four runs in the sixth to pick up the afternoon split. Matt Doherty was the offensive leader for VTSU Lyndon with two hits and four RBI. Holmes (three RBI), Jackson Lizzotte (Old Town, two RBI), and Cam Rendell (three hits, one RBI) led the Eagles and all three also homered. Libby and Trevor Poisson chipped in two hits each. Tanner Audyatis (0-1) took the loss on the mound in relief. Lyndon is now 10-16 and 6-6 in the North Atlantic Conference, while Husson is 10-15 and 9-5. The teams finish the series on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
