The Hammond Lumber Post 213 Riverhawks (White) scored three times in the bottom of the first inning on Sunday afternoon, and held on to defeat the Trenton Acadians 5-3 in a Junior Legion State Tournament game played on Ronald J. St. Pierre Field at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor. Post 213 becomes the first team to advance to Monday’s State Championship Game, and will need to be beaten twice.
Collin Mehrhoff provided a RBI double, and a two-run error led to the three runs scored by the Riverhawks in the bottom of the first inning. Joey Newell added a two-run single in the second that turned out to be the game winning hit. Trenton had the tying run at the plate in the top of the seventh inning, but Noah White earned the save by retiring Tysen Mace on a popout to end it. Jack Kowalski picked up the pitching win allowing one run (none earned) on three hits with four walks and 12 strikeouts in six innings. Coleman Welch had two hits for Trenton, while Wyatt Young suffered the loss on the hill giving up three earned runs on four hits with four walks and 11 strikeouts in 5.1 innings. The Acadians will play the winner of Skowhegan vs Central Maine at 7:30 p.m. Sunday night in the final elimination game for the opportunity to advance to the championship round.
