Maine women’s soccer drops season opener

The University of Maine women’s soccer team dropped their season opener to the University of Rhode Island 1-0 in a non-conference contest played at the URI Soccer Complex in Kingston, RI on Wednesday night.

Nicolasa Jacobs converted on a corner kick for the game winner for the Rams in the 74th minute. The Black Bears, who had a 5-3 edge on shots on goal, responded with some good offensive chances after the goal including hitting one off the crossbar, but were unable to find the equalizer. Junior midfielder Emma Nicholson had the most chances for Maine with three shot attempts (two on goal). Elena Barenberg made two saves in net. The Black Bears open the home schedule by hosting Mercer at the New Balance Soccer Complex in Orono next Thursday night at 7 p.m.
