The Maine women’s soccer team split their home openers this past week, beating Mercer and falling to Sacred Heart in non-conference action at the New Balance Soccer Complex in Orono.
Thursday night- Maine 3, Mercer 1- Senior Luise Renwald scored two second half goals, including the game winner to lead the Black Bears to their first victory of the new year. Junior transfer Isabella Meadows (UConn) opened the scoring in the first minute of play, before Mercer got even on a goal from Olivia Bori in the 6th minute. Sandrine Brault, Britta Denny, Abbey Thornton, and Victoria Dungey each added an assist for Maine. Elena Barenberg made five saves in net.
Sunday afternoon- Sacred Heart 2, Maine 1- The Pioneers got goals from Riley Pettigrew in the 79th minute, and a game winner from Hannah Murphy with just over nine minutes left to improve to 3-0 on the season. Brault scored for the Black Bears unassisted to give them the lead eight minutes into the first half. Barenberg made two saves. Maine is now 1-2 and will stay at home to host Merrimack on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
