The Husson Eagles had two great opportunities late in the fourth quarter on Saturday afternoon, but came up short in falling 13-7 to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in a non-conference football matchup played at H. Carr Field in Worcester, Massachusetts.
The lone Eagles touchdown came on a 19-yard pass from Brody Gibson to wide receiver Brett Davis in the second quarter. Trailing by six late, Husson had 1st and goal at the WPI 4 yard line with about six minutes left to go in the game. The 17 play drive stalled though as they couldn’t punch it into the endzone. They got a three and out on defense to get the ball back with 3:34 remaining, and drove to the Engineers 3 yard line. On third and goal, Gibson took a sack and lost 11 yards and his fourth down throw fell incomplete as the Eagles remained winless.
Jacob Lenz was a bright spot again in the Husson loss with seven catches for 81 yards. Davis also hauled in seven receptions for 44 yards and a score. Gibson threw for 204 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Melvyn Telisca led the defense with eight total tackles (five solo). Lopati Stotler and Calvin Casavant each recorded a sack. The Eagles (0-3) begin Conference of New England play next Saturday with a road game at nationally ranked Division III power Endicott College at 12 p.m.
