UNH rallies to defeat Maine field hockey in overtime

The University of New Hampshire scored the final three goals on Friday afternoon, including a game winner from Julianna Casucci in overtime to rally past Maine 4-3 in America East action at the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono.

The Black Bears built a 2-0 lead in the second quarter on goals from Martha Barratt and Eloise Penty. After the Wildcats scored to slice their deficit in half, a third quarter tally and second of the game from Barratt gave the hosts another two goal lead at 3-1. UNH (3-6, 2-0 in America East) took over from there, and a pair of markers from Sophie Godwin in the 42nd and 48th minute the second of which came off a penalty corner eventually sent the contest to overtime. The guests controlled the action in the extra session, and were rewarded with a penalty corner and took full advantage. Casucci would deflect a Becky Ward shot past Maine goaltender Annabel Halkes to end it with just 1:15 remaining.

Barratt had two goals and one assist for Maine in the loss. Penty added one goal and two assists, while Saylor Kuefler also put two points on the scoresheet with two assists. Halkes made 11 saves, as her team was outshot 18-4 (15-3 on net). The Black Bears fall to 5-6 (1-1 in America East) and will host Merrimack College in a non-conference match on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
