The Maine women’s soccer team bounced back from their first America East loss last Sunday, by blanking NJIT 2-0 on Senior Day at the New Balance Soccer Complex in Orono on Sunday afternoon.
The Black Bears owned the shots over the Highlanders and the corner kick opportunities, and would break through for the game winner from Abbey Thornton (Windham) in the 20th minute. Isabella Meadows set up a shot by Luise Renwald from inside the box, and Thornton deflected it perfectly with the back of her left foot into the left corner of the net. Maine got some insurance when Meadows scored in the 64th minute. Elena Barenberg made two saves in goal to pick up her fourth shutout of the season, as her team had a 17-3 advantage in shots (10-2 on net) and 6-0 on corner kicks. NJIT (4-8-1, 1-4 in America East) split their goaltenders, as Penelope Krieger had two stops in the first half and Kaele Smith made six saves over the final 45 minutes. The Black Bears improve to 5-4-3 and 2-1-1 in conference play and will travel to UNH to battle the Wildcats next Sunday at 2 p.m.
