Maine women’s hockey rallies to beat Providence, picking up first Hockey East win

ORONO- Maine scored three times in the third period on Saturday afternoon, including a game winner off the stick of senior forward Lily Fetch to defeat Providence College 3-1 in women’s Hockey East action at Alfond Arena. The Black Bears split their league opening weekend for their first conference win, and the first for new head coach Alex Gettens.

Maine heavily outshot Providence, owning a 30-13 advantage through two periods, but a second period goal by Sami Snyder had the Friars ahead 1-0. The Black Bears tied it off a PC mistake just 49 seconds into the third, as they shot back towards their own net which wasn’t handled cleanly by their goalie, and Tiani Makokis was there to poke it under the pad of Mallory Hartl. It was the first collegiate goal for Makokis. The captain Fetch came through with the game winner at 7:01, as she stood uncovered to the right of Hartl and made a perfect deflection off a centering pass from the right circle made by Isabelle Michaud to find the back of the net. Lulu Rucinski locked up the Maine win with an empty net goal at 17:58. Hartl made 42 saves in the Providence loss, as they were outshot 45-25. The Friars fall to 4-6 and 2-2 in Hockey East. Makokis had a goal and one assist, while Michaud and Mikayla Boarder had one assist each in the win for Maine. Kiia Lahtinen made 24 stops in net. The Black Bears improve to 4-6 and 1-1 in the conference, and will play a two game series on the road against Boston University next Friday and Saturday.
