The Maine baseball and softball played conference doubleheaders Saturday, with baseball hosting Albany and softball opening their America East schedule at Hartford.
At Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Zach Winn had a great outing on the hill in game one in a 10-2 Maine win, while John Arel did the same in game two to give Maine a 4-1 win and the sweep over Albany.
Jonathan Bennett had two hits and three RBI in game one, while Hernen Sardinas had a pair of hits and pair of RBI to help pace the offense. Winn went 5.2 innings allowing just one run, one hit, and six strikeouts. Brandon Vicens put Maine up early in game two with a two run hit, and had two hits to help sweep the Great Danes. Arel (2-0) went 6.1 innings allowing one run, six hits, and five strikeouts. Every Maine hitter reached base safely on the day, with Vicens leading the way with four hits. Maine is now 7-19, 3-2 America East. Albany falls to 9-10, 1-4. The two teams meet for a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
At West Hartford, Connecticut the Maine softball team opened their conference season with a pair of wins over Hartford.
Laurine German led the way in game one with two hits and three RBI. Alyssa Derrick added a solo homer in a 5-2 win. Annie Kennedy (5-3) got the win in circle going 6.1 innings, allowing two runs, eight hits, with five strikeouts. In game two Erika Leonard, Rachel Carlson, Meghan Royle, and Sarah Coyne all had two hits a piece, but it was Maddie Deckers fielders choice RBI bunt and Derricks sacrifice fly RBI in extra innings that led Maine to a 2-0 win in eight innings. Kyleigh O’Donnell (3-5) got the win in circle going 6.0 innings allowing just three hits, with six strikeouts. Maine is 11-14, 2-0 America East. Hartford is 6-13, 0-2. The two teams play a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
