The Boston Red Sox ended their best regular season in franchise history with a 10-2 win over the New York Yankees on Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park.
J.D. Martinez smacked a three run homer and finished with 43 homers for the season and a league leading 130 RBI. Martinez hit .330. Mookie Betts went 1-2 and scored one run before being taken out of the game to a nice ovation in the top of the third innings. Betts won the batting title with a .346 batting average and tied with Francisco Lindor with 129 runs scored. Xander Bogaerts had two hits, including a two run homer. Bogaerts finished with 23 home runs and 103 RBI.
Brock Holt had two hits and three runs scored. Holt, Jackie Bradley JR, and Eduardo Nunez reached base three times each.
Eduardo Rodriguez (13-5) pitched a scoreless fifth inning to head into the postseason on a positive note. Matt Barnes, Ryan Brasier, and Craig Kimberly also ended the regular season on a positive note with a scoreless inning. Rick Porcello started and pitched two scoreless inning with two strikeouts. After being removed from the game, Porcello threw in the bullpen for the next three innings. The Red Sox finished the regular season with a franchise best 108-54.
The Red Sox will play game one of the division series against the wild card winner on Friday at Fenway Park. The Yankees will host the Athletics on Wednesday night in the wild card game.
