GUILFORD, Maine- Gillian Skehan scored a pair of second half goals Friday afternoon to lead the John Bapst Crusaders girls soccer team to their first win of the season with a 3-0 victory over the Pisquataquis Community High School (PCHS) Pirates in a game played at PCHS.
John Bapst (1-3) controlled play from the opening whistle, outshooting PCHS 29-1 in the first half. But despite the shot differential, Pirates sophomore goalie Lauren Robinson made 18 saves in the first 40 minutes to keep things 0-0 at the half. Robinson made several spectacular saves to keep it scoreless.
The Crusaders got what turned out to be the game winner from Skehan 9:45 into the second half. Skehan got her foot on one from about 25-30 yards out that would elude Robinson, who tried to make a diving save but the ball bounced up and over her and found the back of the net. John Bapst got some insurance 8:50 later when Kate Harriman converted off an Abbie Lawrence assist to make it 2-0. Skehan finished off her two goal day scoring on another deep shot from beyond the box off a feed from Allie Campbell in the final 25 seconds of play.
Freshman goalies Ruby Dwyer (1 save on 1 shot), and Kate Griffin (3 saves on 4 shots) combined for the shutout for John Bapst. Robinson had a remarkable 34 saves on the day, as PCHS was outshot 51-5 in the game. The Pirates drop to 1-3 on the season.
