August 28, 2021

In the season opener for the Maine Black Bear Field Hockey team on Saturday, Fusine Govaert would score early in overtime to lift the #7 Boston College Eagles to a 3-2 win at the BC Field Hockey Complex in Newton, Massachusetts.

Hana Davis would score both Maine goals in the contest, as the Black Bears would hold a one goal lead twice but couldn’t hold on. Davis scored her first of the day at 9:25 of the first quarter on an assist from Sydney Meader. That 1-0 advantage held up until late in the third quarter. Boston College (2-0) got the equalizer from Jaime Natale with 1:47 left in the period. Davis again put the visitors up at 7:48 of the fourth on a helper from Cassandra Mascarenhas. Margo Carlin sent the game to extra time on a deflection off a penalty corner with just 1:02 left in regulation for the Eagles. 2:30 into overtime, Govaert converted into the back of the net on another penalty corner to end it.

Boston College had the advantage on attempted shots 25-9, and on net 11-6, as well as a 9-3 bulge in penalty corner opportunities. Mia Borley made eight saves in net in the losing cause for Maine (0-1), and Emily Gillespie had four stops on the other side for BC. The Black Bears are back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they visit UMass in Amherst.
