At Wieden Gymnasium in Presque Isle, Husson put three players in double figures and built a 17 point first half lead as they cruised to a 66-45 win over the University of Maine-Presque Isle in a North Atlantic Conference women’s basketball matchup Wednesday evening.
The game was a rematch of the conference opener that was played in Bangor on Saturday that Husson won by 34. The Eagles ended the first quarter on an 11-2 run to go up 15-5, and would extend that to 28-11 in the second. The guests would up that to as many as 28 in the fourth. Makaelyn Porter led Husson had 17 points and four assists. Vanessa Duarte added 16 points, six rebounds, five assists, and four steals. At Morrell Gymnasium in Brunswick, Xander Werkman hit two free throws with 3.6 seconds left to lift the Bowdoin Polar Bears to a 71-70 win over the Husson Eagles in a men’s non-conference basketball game.
The contest saw 15 lead changes, with Husson getting the better of the first half holding a 46-39 lead at the break. Bowdoin (7-2) took the lead back with a layup 3:24 into the second half. The teams went back and forth throughout the last 20 minutes, before the Eagles took a 70-69 lead on a J Thomas three-pointer with 1:25 left. A steal by Cole Hanin for the Polar Bears late looked like it would turn into a lead for the hosts, but DJ Bussey stripped it from Hanin to get it back. After a turnover by Thomas, Bowdoin attempted a three-pointer that missed but got the offensive rebound leading to a drive through the lane that was stripped but found its way to Werkman who was fouled while going up for the shot under the basket. Werkman calmly sank both free throws, and Husson never got a shot off before the buzzer sounded on the other end. Bussey led the Eagles with 14 points and Justin Thompson had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jeremy Moronta chipped in 12 points, six rebounds, and eight steals off the bench while Thomas contributed off the bench as well with 10 points. Michael Simonds led Bowdoin with a game high 20 points, while Werkman had 19 points and seven rebounds.
