BANGOR- The Ellsworth Eagles put nine players on the scoresheet on Saturday afternoon, and pulled away from the Orono Red Riots to win the Northern Maine Class B boys regional championship 62-33 at the Cross Insurance Center.
Ellsworth came out strong and never trailed, scoring eight of the first 10 points of the game and taking a 20-10 lead after one quarter. Eagles guard Hunter Curtis put in eight points in the opening eight minutes. They would score the first seven points of the second to extend to a 17 point advantage, and led 32-19 at the halftime break. Ellis Spaulding hit a three-pointer on the first possession of the second half to cut the Red Riots deficit to 10 points, but that is as close as they’d get. Ellsworth put it away with a 15-2 run for a 23 point lead, capturing their first regional title since 2016.
Curtis led the way with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists in the win. Chance Mercier put in 12 points and grabbed five rebounds. Eamon MacDonald added seven points, while Brett Bragdon and Gage Hardy chipped in six points a piece. Spaulding led Orono in the defeat with 10 points, and Ben Francis had nine points and five rebounds. The Eagles outrebounded the Red Riots 28-19. Orono finishes their season at 17-4. Ellsworth (22-0) will battle Yarmouth in the Class B State Championship in Bangor at 8:45 p.m. on Friday night, March 4.
