Amalia Preece scored 7:42 into overtime on Friday afternoon, leading Boston University to a 3-2 victory over Maine in non-conference field hockey action at the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono.
Payton Anderson got the scoring started, tallying early in the second quarter for Boston University. Molly Mackesy tied it for Maine with just over five minutes left in the third, her third goal of the season. Just 1:48 after the goal by Mackesy, the Black Bears took their only lead of the contest on a marker by Saylor Kuefler. But 2:23 later, the Terriers made it 2-2 on a goal by Alex Purcell unassisted. There was no scoring in the fourth period, sending the game to the sudden death overtime where Preece ended it on an assist from Thalia Steenssens.
Poppy Lambert and Kristjana Walker had one assist each in the loss for Maine, who fell to 1-2 on the season. Mallory Drayer played the entire first half in net, and Jayde Temby finished the final 37:42 in the cage. Steenssens had two assists in the win for Boston University, while Megan Wetzel added one. Kate Thomason made six saves in goal, as the Terriers improved to 1-1. Maine will play host to Ohio University out of the Mid-American Conference on Sunday at 12 p.m.
