Husson football falls on the road to Springfield College

Jacob Silvester and Arsen Shtefan both rushed for a pair of touchdowns on Saturday afternoon, leading Springfield College to a 45-20 non-conference Division III football win over Husson University at Stagg Field in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Springfield (2-0) took an immediate 14-0 lead just over four minutes in, thanks to a fumble recovery and a blocked punt deep in Husson territory. The scores came on a one yard run by Silvester and an 18 yard run by Blane Hart. The Eagles responded just 47 seconds later, when Elijah Garnett who had a career day on the ground took it 72 yards for a touchdown. The extra point however was no good, and eight points is the closest Husson would be the remainder of the afternoon. After Shtefan scored on a four yard run for the Pride, Garnett got his second TD of the half on a three yard score. The hosts then began to pull away as they added a 30 yard field goal, and a 10 yard pass from Silvester to Bradley Barcell to increase the advantage to 31-13 at the half. Silvester picked up his second rushing touchdown in the third quarter for a 25 point bulge. The teams swapped touchdowns in the fourth, as Husson got a six yard rushing score from Jed Lober and Shtefan had an 18 yard rushing TD for Springfield.

Nic Visser was 17-21 passing for 116 yards and an interception in the loss for 1-1 Husson. Garnett had 17 rushing attempts and a career-high 164 yards with two touchdowns. Cullen Casey had the most receptions with eight for 35 yards, and Ashton Navarrete had the most yards (48) on three catches. CJ Nicely and Adam Bertrand both had 11 total tackles for the Eagles defense. Silvester had two scoring runs on the ground (13 rush- 33 yards), and only went 2-4 passing for 21 yards and a touchdown in the win for Springfield College. Shtefan rushed 20 times for 153 yards and two touchdowns. The Pride ran for a total of 441 yards. Husson is back in action next Saturday at noon in New York against Alfred State College.
