BANGOR- The #10 MDI Trojans never trailed building a 10 point lead after one quarter, and would lead by as many as 19 on Friday evening in upsetting #2 Maranacook 60-52 in a Maine Principals’ Association Class B boys quarterfinal at the Cross Insurance Center.
MDI had five different scorers in the first quarter alone, as they broke off to an early 13-3 lead after eight minutes. Jameson Weir put in eight points in the second as the Trojans led 27-17 at the halftime break. They would spread around the scoring again in the third quarter, putting seven players in the points column led by six from Jarron Biekert to extend their advantage to 48-29. Maranacook would pull close late, but simply ran out of time as the Trojans advance to a Wednesday morning semifinal against #3 Old Town at 10 a.m.
Weir led MDI with 15 points, while Spencer Laurendeau added 14 points, three rebounds, and four assists. Cal Hodgdon contributed nine points and four rebounds. Biekert finished with eight points and six rebounds, while James Witham also put in eight points. Joey Wellman Clause and Jacob Shields rounded it out with three points a piece. The Trojans improve to 10-10, moving into the regional semifinals after upsetting Bucksport in the prelims to get to the quarterfinal round. Keagan McClure led Maranacook in the loss with 16 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Brandon Chilton had 13 points and seven rebounds. Also scoring was Robby Vivenzio with nine points and five rebounds, Elijah Freeman seven points, Jack Fontaine four points, and Wyatt Folsom with three points. The Black Bears outrebounded the Trojans 27-23, but the difference was at the foul line where MDI was 21-28 and Maranacook went 3-8. Maranacook finishes their season at 15-4.
