Maine baseball splits America East doubleheader at NJIT, wins the series

Due to the forecast on Sunday, the Maine baseball team would finish their three game America East series with NJIT by playing a doubleheader at Yogi Berra Stadium in Little Falls, New Jersey on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1- NJIT 6, Maine 3 (7 innings): The Highlanders used a three-run sixth inning to pull away for the win. Rowin O’Connor and Jack Stead had two hits each, and Brody Levin added two RBI. Mark Scamardella (3-2) earned the pitching win allowing three runs on seven hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Becker Sybirski recorded his second save by getting the final out. Hunter St. Denis had three hits and one RBI for the Black Bears. Gianni Gambardella (4-4) took the loss on the mound giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits with two walks and one strikeout in 5.1 innings.

Game 2- Maine 4, NJIT 2 (9 innings): Nic Pepe gave the Black Bears a lead they wouldn’t give back with a two-run homerun in the third inning to help his team win the series. Shane Andrus and Jack Quigley added a solo homer each. It was the first of the year for Quigley. Juju Stevens and St. Denis had two hits a piece behind Vaun Larisa (1-3) who picked up his first win of the season on the mound allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Brennan Rumpf (Falmouth) pitched a scoreless final 3.0 frames to get his second career save and first of this season. Lorenzo Camilleri (solo homer) and Cole Campbell (RBI double) provided the scoring for the Highlanders, who had their record go to 13-21 and 4-11 in America East. Maine is 11-24 and 7-5 in league play. They return to action on Tuesday for a non-conference game at Boston College, before hosting a three game America East series with UMBC next weekend.
