Kyle Douin (Cony) homered and set two program records, while Peter Keblinsky (Ellsworth) hit the first Huskies cycle in 12 years on Saturday afternoon as the University of Southern Maine beat Eastern Connecticut State 19-8 in Game 2 of a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader in Gorham.
Caleb Vacchiano (Sacopee) hit a three-run double in the second inning to give the Huskies (26-10, 13-3 LEC) a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Douin had two hits and five RBI, Carter Higgins had two hits and three RBI, while Keblinsky recorded five hits while driving in two. James Main also had three hits and three RBI. Douin broke the program record set by Cam Seymour for career homeruns (37), while also setting a second program mark in the game for career RBI (195) that had been set previously by Tyler Delorme (193). The cycle by Keblinsky was the first since Forrest Chadwick did so in April of 2014. The Warriors won Game 1 of the doubleheader 10-3. The Game 2 Huskies victory though clinched the top seed and hosting rights for the Little East Tournament. It is the first regular season championship for USM since 2019, and their 14th overall in program history. They will take on #6 seed Vermont State University Castleton in the opening game on Wednesday afternoon at 12 p.m.
