Colby suffers tough extra inning loss to Middlebury in NESCAC Softball Semifinals

#3 seed Colby softball lost a heartbreaker in the NESCAC Semifinals on Sunday afternoon, falling to #2 Middlebury College 6-4 in 11 innings at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

The Mules had an early 4-1 lead, before the Panthers (32-8) scored twice in the bottom of the third inning and once in the last of the seventh to send it to extra frames. Both teams had runners in scoring position in extra innings, but it remained knotted up until the bottom of the 11th. With two outs and McKenna Lont on base, Jen Westphal took a 1-2 pitch over the fence in left to end it and send Middlebury to the championship game. Juliana Kiley had four hits and two RBI to lead Colby (26-11), Carissa Cassidy had three hits, while Emma Burnham (Bonny Eagle) and Avery Lyman contributed two hits a piece. The Panthers went on to defeat Williams College 7-5 later on Sunday afternoon to win the NESCAC Championship.
