The Sanford Mainers scored three times in the sixth inning on Saturday night and would defeat the Valley Blue Sox 5-2 in Game 1 of a New England Collegiate Baseball League first round playoff series at Goodall Park.
Steven Kraus (Binghamton University) had a RBI infield single in that sixth inning that ended up being the difference in the game. Another run came across on the same play on an error, and Brennan Staubley (Elon University) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to provide some insurance. Nater Wachter (UConn) also hit a two-run homerun in the victory. Andrew Middleton (Maryland) went the first four innings on the mound in a no-decision allowing one earned run on four hits. Old Town native Gabe Gifford (University of Southern Maine) picked up the win in relief giving up no runs and no hits with one walk and four strikeouts in three innings. Sam Young (University of Richmond) got the two inning save, also not allowing a run or a hit. The Mainers will look to finish the series when they travel to Holyoke, Massachusetts to battle the Blue Sox in Game 2 on Sunday at 6:35 p.m.
