Quarterback Michael Marcucella helped to lead three second half touchdown drives, and scored two of those with his feet as Framingham State defeated Husson University 33-21 in a non-conference football season opener at the Winkin Complex in Bangor on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles had the lead twice in the contest (7-0, 14-13), and took that one point edge by way of a Rams missed extra point heading into the halftime break. Brett Davis had a 31-yard touchdown catch from Brody Gibson, and Anthony Santacroce scored on a 3-yard run for the Husson points. Ransford Adri had a short TD run and Ayden Ramirez caught a 26-yard TD from Marcucella for Framingham State. Marucella scored on a 2-yard run on a QB keeper just over four minutes into the third quarter to give the Rams the lead for good, and then got in on a 1-yarder with 9:37 left to play that turned out to be the game winner. Jacob Lenz caught a 16-yard TD pass from Gibson for the Eagles final points, while Marcucella capped off his big second half for Framingham with a 38-yard scoring pass to Mathias Fowler with just 2:04 remaining.
Marcucella finished his day completing 18 of 33 passes for 380 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He also scored two touchdowns on the ground in the win for Framingham State. Fowler also had a big afternoon as he caught six passes for 193 yards and a touchdown, including a 63-yard reception. Gibson went 14 for 26 for 131 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Husson loss. Santacroce rushed 14 times for 46 yards and a score, while Lenz had six receptions for 68 yards and a TD. Brayden Trombley and Erik Menger each had 10 total tackles. Trombley had an interception. Menger added 1.5 tackles for a loss and one sack. Calvin Casavant had seven total tackles (1.5 for a loss) and 1.5 sacks. The Eagles will host Springfield College next Saturday at noon.
