Daniel Ruiz Cantu rushed for two touchdowns, and Brody Gibson passed for another on Saturday afternoon as Husson football won their first game of the season and evened their Conference of New England record with a 26-21 homecoming victory over Western New England at the Winkin Complex in Bangor.
Jacob Lenz made a beautiful 17-yard touchdown catch on a pass from Gibson in the first quarter, as the Eagles took a lead they never relinquished. Husson also intercepted Western New England quarterback Paul Gorry twice in the first half (four times overall), and two rushing scores by Ruiz Cantu made it 20-7 at the break. Melvyn Telisca had an 85 yd interception return in the third quarter to extend their lead to 26-7. The Golden Bears (2-3, 1-1 in Conference of New England) did get into the endzone again in the fourth to slice that lead down to five, but a running into the kicker penalty on 4th down late gave the Eagles a new set of downs and they ran out the clock for their first victory.
Gorry passed for 114 yards and two touchdowns in the WNE loss, but was only 7 for 24 with four interceptions. Kevin Acosta was the standout for the Golden Bears with six catches for 107 yards and two TDs. Gibson went 16 for 26 for 143 yards and a touchdown for Husson. Ruiz Cantu rushed for 65 yards on 20 carries with the two big first half touchdowns. Lenz reeled in four receptions for 55 yards and a score. Caden Crocker (Foxcroft Academy) only entered Saturday with eight catches for 44 yards, but had his best game of the season by catching seven for 50 yards. Cooper McNamara had 11 total tackles (seven solo) and an interception to lead the defense. Erik Menger and JT Wright both had 10 total tackles. Telisca had two interceptions, while Brayden Trombly added the fourth interception of the afternoon. The Eagles (1-4, 1-1 CNE) will have a week off before resuming league play with a road game at New England College on Saturday, October 17th at 12 p.m.
