Maine field hockey falls in a shootout to Albany in America East semifinals

The season for the Maine field hockey team came to an end at home on Tuesday afternoon, as Albany ousted the Black Bears in a shootout in the America East semifinals at the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono.

#2 seed Maine, who would of hosted the league championship game on Friday with a victory, took the lead in the second quarter at 11:02 on a goal from Emily Chisholm that was assisted by Saylor Kuefler. Quinty Reumer tied the game 1-1 to send it to overtime for Albany by scoring with 5:41 left in the match off assists by Mara Kuskes and Emma Staron. The teams would go scoreless through a 15 minute overtime, forcing a shootout. Pilar Lorenzini and Kuskes both scored for the Great Danes first two shooters, and after Kuefler tallied as the third shooter for the Black Bears, it came down to Eloise Penty to extend the shootout for Maine. Penty though was stopped by Merle Vaandrager sending #3 seed Albany to the championship game. Vaandrager made two saves in the win, as the Great Danes (11-6) will host #5 Vermont in the title game on Friday at 2 p.m. Freshman Annabel Halkes had a great season in net for Maine, and she ended up with seven stops as the Black Bears end the year after their ninth straight semifinal appearance with a record of 8-9.
