GUILFORD— It is not how you start, it is how you finish. Jawel Lamb finished very strong in helping the Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) Pirates softball team pick up a 13-8 win over Schenck on Friday afternoon,
The Wolverines started quickly against Lamb and the Pirates. They took advantage of two walks and five wild pitches to score five runs in the top of the first inning.
PCHS responded quickly with a four run bottom of the first inning. Courtney Deane had the big hit, when she ripped a triple and came around to score on a Schenck error.
The Wolverines scored two runs in the top of the second inning as they took advantage of two errors and a Chantel Lane double. PCHS responded when Lamb singled and came scored on a Jordynne Littlefield double to cut the deficit to 7-5 after two innings.
After a quiet third inning, each team got the offense going again in the fourth inning. Anna Sewall hit a single, stole second and third, and came around to score on a Pirates error. The bottom of the fourth inning started with a single from Erin Speed, she stole second and scored on a Lamb single, Alivia Hunt cut the deficit to 8-7 when she drilled a single that scored Lamb.
Lamb retired the final 11 batters she faced. That gave the offense an opportunity to do their thing. Rachel Beckwith led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single, she came around to score when Speed drilled one that ended up getting past the centerfielder, Speed would touch the plate on the play to give the Pirates a lead (9-8) they wouldn’t give back.
PCHS put four insurance runs on the board in the sixth inning. Hunt had the big hit during the inning when she drilled a triple that scored Delani Bennett and Littlefield. Deane and Beckwith each had a run scoring hit during the inning.
Deane and Lamb each had three hits and three runs scored. Hunt recorded three hits, three RBI, and two runs scored, Beckwith added three hits, Deane contributed two hits, two runs scored, and two RBI, while Littlefield had two RBI. Lamb allowed eight runs (six earned), two walks, and recorded four strikeouts. She didn’t issue a walk after the first inning, and only allowed one hit and one unearned run after the second inning. PCHS (4-3 will play at Stearns on Monday.
Sewall led the Wolverines offense with two hits and two runs scored, while Hannah Taft had a double and two RBI. Lane and Ally Noddin scored two runs each. Schenck (3-3) will host PVHS on Monday.
