Boston College finishes off weekend Hockey East sweep over Maine

#5 Boston College built a 2-0 lead in the second period and then held on for a 3-2 win Saturday night at Alfond Arena in Orono to sweep a two game Hockey East series over Maine before a sell crowd of 5,125.

Maine is now winless in seven straight games (0-5-2) and falls to 3-5-2 overall and 0-2-0 in Hockey East, while BC goes to 8-2-1, 4-0-1.

Ron Greco scored the lone goal of the opening period 13:10 in, while Scott Savage scored at 10:47 of period two to make it 2-0 Eagles. Ryan Smith scored a powerplay goal for the Bears at 18:14 though to cut the lead to 2-1 after two periods.

The Eagles built back the two goal lead when Mike Booth scored at 9:01 of the third to make it 3-1. The Black Bears got back within one goal just 1:17 later though as Dane Gibson scored to make it 3-2.

Maine had some great chances in the closing moments of the game including a two man advantage with a powerplay and the goalie pulled with 12 seconds left, but couldn’t get it past goalie Joe Woll who picks up his sixth win in net with 28 saves on 30 shots. Rob McGovern took the loss making 31 saves on 34 shots.

Maine will play a home and home Hockey East series next weekend with UMass-Lowell, hosting the Riverhawks Friday night at 7 p.m. before heading to Lowell for a Sunday matchup at 3 p.m. BC will host Hockey East rival UNH Tuesday night at 7 p.m. before hosting Arizona State Sunday at 3 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
