The University of Maine Field hockey season came to a crashing halt Friday afternoon as Maine was topped 3-2 by the University of California in the America East quarterfinals in Stockton, California.

Danielle Aviani scored in the 31st minute to give Maine a 1-0 lead. The Golden Bears tied the game four minutes into the second half on a goal from Nicole Henriksson.

Maine was able to jump back on top on another Aviani goal to make it 2-1. A penalty stroke by Californias Kate Iwanaga late in the second half tied it 2-2. Katrina Carver scored the game winning goal with just under four minutes left.

Emily Corbett took the loss in the Maine goal as the Bears finished their season with an overall record of 13-7. Cal had their season ended Saturday with a 2-0 loss to Stanford in the conference semifinals. Cal finishes up at 5-13 overall.

The University of Maine Womens Ice Hockey team rallied from a 3-0 deficit late in the third period, but would fall 3-2 at Northeastern Saturday afternoon.

A first period goal from the Huskies Denisa Krizova, a second period score from Paige Savage, and a third period goal that proved to be a game winner by McKenna Brand had staked Northeastern to the 3-0 lead.

Maine rallied back on goals from Catherine Tufts with 6:15 left in the game, and a Brooke Stacy goal with 57 seconds left and the goalie pulled cut the deficit to just one goal. The Bears couldn’t find the equalizer though, as they fell to 2-9 overall and 1-6 in Hockey East.

Maine returns home next weekend as they host Boston University on Friday and Saturday at 2 p.m.
