February 19, 2019

BANGOR, Maine- Andrew Szwez scored a game high 21 points, and three players got into double figures on Tuesday morning as the George Stevens Academy Eagles cruised to a 73-37 quarterfinal win over the Calais Blue Devils in a Maine Principals’ Association Class C boys basketball game at the Cross Insurance Center.

GSA (17-3), who has won three straight state titles, got out to an 11-0 lead with Szwez knocking down a pair of three pointers during the run. The Eagles led 15-9 after one quarter, then extended that lead to 15 at the half by outscoring the Blue Devils 14-5 in the second quarter.

A 9-2 run to start the third quarter put the game out of reach, as it was 46-25 after three. Calais (7-13) never chipped into the 21 point deficit, and GSA led by as many as 37 late in the game and scored 27 fourth quarter points to pull away.

Szwez added eight rebounds and two assists to his point total for the Eagles. Isaac Wardwell had 18 points and five rebounds. Reece Dannenburg chipped in 12 points. For Calais, Dawson Critchley had 18 points and six rebounds and had all 12 fourth quarter points for the Blue Devils.

GSA, the #3 seed, will face the #2 seed Mattanawcook Lynx in a Friday afternoon semifinal at 2:05 p.m.
