Top seed PVHS girls soccer gets by Southern Aroostook to reach regional final

In Hampden, the top seed PVHS Howlers hosted the Southern Aroostook Warriors in a Class D North semifinal match. Southern Aroostook came in as the 5th seed, after knocking off the Schenck Wolverines. The Howlers came away with a 3-1 win.

PVHS defeated Madawaska in their quarterfinal match. PVHS had numerous chances early, and just missed several shots wide of the goal. Delaney Theriault finally opened the scoring when she received a Lexi Ireland pass and found the back of the net with 13 minutes to go in the first half. Just before the half, Leine McKechnie played a free kick to Lexi Ireland who received the ball wide before playing a driven cross far post to Emily St. Cyr. St. Cyr easily placed the ball past the SA keeper for the 2-0 lead.

PVHS held the shot advantage at the half, outshooting SA 13-4. 12 minutes in to the second half, Southern Aroostook was able to get a run on the Howler defense, and Madison Russell put the Warriors on the board with a goal. Five minutes later, Delaney Theriault scored her second goal, giving the Howlers the decisive two goal advantage. Howler keeper Emilee Ireland recorded 6 saves on 10 shots as the improve to 15-1 and advance to the Northern Maine Finals. SA goalie Sydney Brewer made 14 saves on 25 shots for the Warriors as they finish the year 10-6-0. Penobscot Valley will face Central Aroostook, the reigning Northern Maine Champions, in Presque Isle at 6:30pm on Wednesday. This year marks the first time in 33 years that the PVHS Girls and Boys have been to a regional final at the same time.
